Louisiana is the perfect reflection of the country at large. Here is a portion of our country that has seen first hand just how incompetent and useless big government actually is. Now people are beginning to compare the failed responses of both their local government and the federal government in 2 major disasters within a decade.
Hurricane Katrina exposed how at the local level, government was unprepared for a disaster that many had predicted would happen for decades. While the images of the flood itself are still in our memory, how about this picture; hundreds of busses that could have been used to New Orleans sat for days unused and were left behind as the flood waters rushed in. Not to mention the stories of the hundreds of thousands of people who were haphazardly corralled into the New Orleans Superdome instead of being evacuated.
This was followed by the Federal Emergancy Management Agency (FEMA) completely botching up in the days that followed with no organization and no communication. Thousands of manufactured homes that FEMA had purchased sat unused because of FEMA's own regulations. While people suffered without shelter, the mobile homes previously used for Florida hurricane victims, also sat unused for months in a vacant lot Venice LA.
The people in these communities identified the problems and have elected new leaders of their state and insisted on more organized emergency response protocols. Government, after all, works best when it is closer to the people it serves. Yet despite all of the efforts to fix things locally, the oil disaster happened.
Now even with a more organized local government, an ever larger and more dysfunctional federal government ran the show. Booms sat in factories undeployed for weeks as the oil made it's way to the shore. BP was given orders on what to do, with daily contradictions and delays, and money was not released for state officials to take action. In fact, in a recent poll of Louisiana's residence, over 50% of both Republicans and Democrats believe that the Oil Spill was handled worse by the Obama Administration than Katrina was by the Bush Administration.
"Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me!"
This is a watershed moment for the people of Louisiana and for the nation at large. The call should be to reduce the size of the federal government and return control to state and local governments. After all, this was the way our nation was created to work. The lesson learned, from both Katrina and the Oil Spill, is that the larger and more complex a government is, the less capable it becomes of achieving any of it's objectives. The progressive experiment of a big federal government is over, and the results are in. Continuing to expect the Federal Government to get better by being even bigger is as foolish as calling for stopping production of oil and massively increasing taxes on oil to solve this current disaster.
