Taxes - The Heritage FoundationTaxes - The Heritage Foundation A powerful lesson of recent months is that gimmickry makes good bumper stickers but lousy economic stimulus. View Article - Sat, 28 Aug 2010 01:00:00 -0400 President Obama has called for a huge tax increase to take effect on January 1, 2011. Instead of reducing spending, he proposes to raise taxes on a wide swath of taxpayers—including small businesses—despite the weak economic recovery. Congressional Democrats stand poised (immediately following the November elections) to endorse the President’s request and threaten to go much further. Proponents of letting the tax cuts expire—which would indeed be a tax hike—have offered a wide array of justifications for this wrongheaded policy. Heritage Foundation fiscal policy expert J. D. Foster wades through the myths and straw arguments to set the record straight. Analysts at The Heritage Foundation’s Center for Data Analysis (CDA) conducted static and dynamic analyses of the act (H.R. 5029), finding that over the long term, dynamic economic effects would offset much of the cost of the tax relief. In the short term, the act would increase the deficit if it was not coupled with reductions in spending. This means a specific plan for spending cuts is imperative. The CDA analysts detail the economic and fiscal effects of the Economic Freedom Act’s spending and tax cuts. It affects hundreds of thousands of small-business owners across the country—as well as their employees and community residents who benefit from the senior and day care centers, playgrounds, charities, and learning centers that are built or supported by small-business owners. Like water and sunlight in an ecosystem, small businesses provide sustenance essential to building and preserving communities. So high is the death tax that a large portion of heirs to small companies cannot afford to pay it after the business founder dies, and see themselves forced to sell to giant corporations—which have no personal ties to the communities of their new acquisitions, and thus no incentive to commit to local institutions. What does the death tax kill? The best of American life and civil society itself. The death tax is simply antithetical to the core of the American dream. Sandwich Generation?!?!? |

As a Tea Party guy, I have decided this year to get out in front of the issues, rather than play the reactionary game we all did last year. It appears that the President plans to coin a new phrase in this Wednesday’s State of the Union address. The phrase is “Sandwich Generation”.
| Sandwich Generation |
|
| A generation of people who are caring for their aging parents while supporting their own children |
|
| Webster’s Dictionary added in 1987 | |
| |
Is this a new phrase for you? Well where have YOU been?!? There is an entire month dedicated to the awareness of the Sandwich Generation; July according to the National Special Events Registry. Don’t tell me you haven’t heard of this organization either. Just in case: in an effort to reduce the number of silly bills being introduced, in 1994 the U.S. House of Representatives announced that Congress would no longer recognize special days, weeks, or months sponsored by association, corporations or individuals. The National Special Events Registry replaced these Congressional resolutions and provides a list of over 18,500 special days, weeks and months that people pay even less attention to than Congress, but I digress.
Carol Abaya has made a good living of the phrase “Sandwich Generation”. From regular columns, seminars, and even her own web site, she has even gone so far as to register the name for Trade Mark. I wonder if the President will point her out in the State of the Union as payment for the use of the term. Considering her body of work indicates her more conservative values.
While the term sounds nice, I think it will be yet another example of the Obama Administration attempting to use a phrase without thinking through the meaning will be taken by the American public at large. Remember “They Acted Stupidly”? Those of us, once called the silent majority; know what it really feels like to be a sandwich. We are currently sandwiched between two political parties, both with the same big government agenda. We are fighting now to find a way out, and we are certain of one thing; President Obama is NOT the way.
This year will see many new faces on the political landscape. My hope is that the ones the American people will push to the top will be a better refection of the Center Right country we are. They must, like the race in Massachusetts, shift the paradigm even further. Then, and only then, can we tell the federal government we will no longer pay for that massive, greasy, unhealthy triple cheese burger we call Congress today, and insist on a light salad instead. By the way, use lettuce instead of arugula, it’s cheaper!
